Shut Up and Play the Hits (Demand IT)

So this bad ass documentary about LCD Soundsystem's final shows is showing in theatres across the USA for one night only: July 18. Of course, they overlooked huge El Paso but we have the chance to demand it. As of right now only 14 other people have demanded it. Here's to hoping we can see it here in July too!

The work of Dougal Wilson

I wish I could say I've been up on Mr. Wilson's amazing work for a while, but the truth is I just barely came across it. Born in Heswall, England, Dougal studied physics at Durham University. He went on to work for an advertising agency before moving to London to pursue his career in directing. And Thank god he did. Most famous for his music videos, Wilson also has directed many commercials and even short films. His style is very unique, blending a fair share of classic cinematography with a touch of the avant garde sensibility so many new directors like Michel Gondry and others have. Here are a music video, a commercial and a short film from one of my new favorite directors.

An amazing video shot for Melbourne rockers The Temper Trap's song "Love Lost" from their 2009 LP Conditions. Everything about this video is awesome from the kids lip syncing abilities and heart felt performances to the mad cheesey but right on point choreography!

Having a daughter myself, this commercial almost brought me to tears. Oh and for non Brits, John Lewis is a faceless department store throughout the UK, how ironic.

A truly cool short silent film based on the aria from the Opera "The Barber of Seville"

Okay one more music video from Mr. Bad Ass director. For The Lcd Soundsystem jam "Tribulations".

Holy shit speaking of Lcd Soundsystem, did ya know they're calling it quits!!! Seems like frontman James Murphy is ready to hang up the dancing shoes for record exec shoes. Alls I know is seeing them this past year at ACL makes it all that much sweeter knowing it was possibly one of the last times to ever catch 'em.. The Last song on one of 2010's best best best albums This is Happening, here's the dope ass vid for "Home", also the closer from an amazing show under a sun setting sky one beautiful evening in ATX! -Nick

ACL 2010: LCD Soundsystem

I’d have to say that my personal favorite at this year’s Austin City Limits was LCD Soundsystem – and this is coming from someone that probably wasn’t a fan before this year. James Murphy was definitely the kind of artist I never truly understood, for whatever lame reason, and it was This Is Happening that changed my views. It’s still probably my most-heard album of the year and the one that continues to amaze me with every single repeated listen.
Saturday right, as the sun (that's it up on the banner) was setting, was LCD Soundsystem’s time at ACL. They played from 530-630 and now, when I look at these pictures, it’s crazy just how light to dark it went, fast. I don’t remember the sound being nearly this loud but I absolutely love it when Murphy screams “Don’t you want me to wake up?!” There are just so many one-liners on this song, on this entire album, that it’s astounding. And I didn’t even used to dig “Drunk Girls” too much but now, it’s nothing more than a dance-your-troubles-away, catchy, bumpy ride, or is that what “Dance Yrself Clean” is about?

I definitely need to apologize because as I’m finally listening to this for the first time, hearing my voice against such beautiful music is annoying so seriously, sorry for that. To try and place this into some kind of contextual meaning: you always want to see your favorite bands/artists when they’re at their utmost peak. I’m getting ahead of myself but LCD Soundsystem is definitely one of the greatest bands of our current time. I’m still in awe of the simple fact that we got to stand there, in an hour of mesmerizing music and where I definitely danced till I felt myself clean (lame!) and listen to LCD Soundsystem play “I Can Change,” “All My Friends,” “You Wanted a Hit,” and end with “Home.” – Bryan

LCD Soundsystem - This Is Happening

"But honestly, and be honest with yourself, how much time do you waste? How much time do you blow every day?"

I know it’s lame to post about an album that everyone has either heard or at least heard of already. But LCD Soundsystem’s latest album, This Is Happening, has been my most played album for the last three weeks and it’s been growing on me more and more. Not only do I think it just might be James Murphy’s best album to date but its sounds are so effectively superb that it sounds like it was crafted through years and years of delivery. It’s shocking to find out that its recording process was rather quick and all done in The Mansion, the famous ten-bedroom mansion owned by Rick Rubin.

The opening song, “Dance Yrself Clean” is easily, one of my favorite songs of the year. It’s stunning because sure, Murphy is mostly an electronic artist but the sounds he’s created are so brilliantly amazing that it’s almost like classical music in a modern setting. And by the time that explosion hits, you’re left in awe:

But as I’ve slowly gotten to get into, each song on This Is Happening is simply astounding. There’s the incredible growth of the closer and how it ties in the musical theme presented on the aforementioned opener, there is also the way “One Touch” continues to add more and more drums before offering its own change of pace, the beautifully developed sounds on “You Wanted a Hit,” and also the startlingly great indie rock of “All I Want.” But what has had me really addicted lately is “Pow Pow” and its memorable one-liners. Not only do the sounds and rhythms recall Talking Heads but Murphy’s casual delivery and his ability at creating those one-liners ("I'm paralyzed and looking through you. But if nothing's right, we try anyway") is unmatched, check it out here. – Bryan

LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver

We’ve all been on the major high that This Is Happening has us in but man, I couldn’t help going back to this previous album, Sound of Silver and was amazed at how good it is. Back on their first album, James Murphy and Co. made an awesome self-titled album that featured them being playful, creative and entirely mesmerizing. It was the kind of album that you could bliss out too, as well as just jam out to. And when Sound of Silver came out, I was a bit shocked at how different the whole sound was.

It took and it’s taken a helluva long time for me to really like it, but this is one awesome album. The opener (heard below) is built upon layers and layers of sounds, before everyone is heard singing the title and later on, in the heart of the album, you have arguably, the two best songs sandwiched in between each other, “Someone Great” and “All My Friends. (heard below)” At the end, Murphy is belting out about his struggles in the city and yet, he realizes just how much he loves it. If you even remotely like the new one, check this one out too, soon – Bryan.
